What is a postural assessment?
A postural assessment is a visual way for a trained therapist to check someone’s overall alignment. It can highlight any postural deviations that could be causing musculoskeletal pain or discomfort.
What can I expect from a postural assessment?
We will look at your posture in a static position to see what is neutral for you so that we can assess for muscle imbalances, muscle weakness, or any other faults in movement patterns. We will usually ask you to carry out certain movement patterns to mirror day to day activities or actions that provoke any symptoms you may have, whilst closely looking to see how the muscles involved are working and if they are working correctly.
During the assessment we will also look at symmetry/asymmetry and imbalances between the neck, shoulders, hips, spinal curvature, ankle and plumb line (head to toe line).
What is the aim of a postural assessment?
The overall aim of a postural assessment is to understand and highlight potential muscular imbalances or weaknesses that could be contributing to existing pain or could potentially lead to injury in the future.
Who can benefit from a postural assessment?
Anyone can benefit from a postural assessment, from desk workers and the elderly to athletes and regular gym-goers. It will check if everything is aligned, well balanced and working correctly for that individual to prevent injuries, pain or discomfort. If you are already experiencing symptoms then a postural assessment can help to identify possible issues and get to the root cause of it which will aid the treatment process which will be specific to the individual.
