tfd Three Peaks Challenge June 2012
Two teams of brave people took to the Welsh hills to prepare for the 24hr challenge to climb Ben Nevis, Scaffell Pike and Snowdon.
The best advice was to do this close to the longest day, 21st June. Given June is normally pretty good weather we thought… but we had no idea what we were in store for. The training walks were great fun, people being tested outside their comfort zones and everyone being so supportive and encouraging.
Two minibuses, one support vehicle and Linda’s lipstick, we were off! First stop, Ben Nevis with heavy rain and snow at the top, the teams raced up and back down to face a warm stew, then off to Scaffell Pike where the rain got heavier and roads were being closed at random points as we entered the Lake District borders. The rain kept falling but our walkers kept walking! Everyone was damp, cold and tired yet everyone just lifted everyone else up to stay focused and on track. Hot bacon rolls were at the ready on their decent along with some very alert sheep due to the snoring of John, Jason and Roly.
Back in the buses and off to North Wales to conquer Snowdon. Yes, more rain, steamy windows and by this time a great deal less chatter. The focus remained and off they went for the last time….what strength and determination they had. The weather wasn’t kind but it just made them more focused.
