Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis and is one of the leading causes of pain and disability worldwide (NICE, 2008, Reginster, 2002). It is characterised by a progressive loss of articular cartilage, joint space narrowing sclerosis (thickening) of subchondral bone and osteophyte formation.
Those suffering with OA assume that, because it is degenerative and without cure, there is nothing that can be done to improve their quality of life. Well they could not be more wrong.
Since the early 2000’s various studies have concluded that a combination of manual therapy and exercise prescription is not only effective at reducing knee pain, but also increasing range of motion (ROM) within the knee, increasing quadriceps strength, reducing inflammation, increasing functionality and overall increasing ones quality of life (Tsokanos A, et al 2021).
A course of manual therapy can help to address any muscular and soft tissue imbalances in the knee, correct knee mechanics and reduce poor mechanical load, maintain health and increase ones overall well being to ensure that you keep going with the day to day activities you wish to enjoy.
Don’t let osteoarthritis stop you from living the life you want!
