Lower back pain is a fairly broad topic that can cover a wide range of issues including but not limited to structural issues with the spine or discs, restriction around the SIJ (sacroiliac joint – where your spine meets your pelvis), pelvis alignment, or soft tissue structures not working correctly causing imbalances.
One common way to help improve lower back pain is some gentle stretches and strengthening exercises in a controlled manner to help build strength through the lower back muscles as well as your glutes.
Strengthening your glutes and making sure they are working correctly will help to take any extra pressure off your back and spine. Your glutes are the most powerful muscles in your body so if they aren’t firing as they should then this puts a lot of stress on the surrounding muscles in the posterior chain – commonly the lower back. Weak or underactive glutes can mean there is no support for the lower spine and pelvis, hip mobility will also be affected and your posture, which in turn can cause more issues for the lower back.
Exercises such as glute bridges, bird dogs, dorsal raises and fire hydrants are just a few examples of exercises, along with stretches focusing on the lower back, that can help anyone whether you are suffering with lower back pain or are looking to prevent this from becoming a problem.
