Mobilisations are an effective way to treat joint pain and restricted movement patterns. It is a manual therapy technique using movement of a joint or soft tissue structure to encourage a wider range of motion to this area. The aim of a mobilisation is to restore function to the joint or affected tissues, and to reduce pain. Mobilisations can be beneficial to joints as well as soft tissue structures including muscles, tendons, ligaments, and fascia. They are commonly used as treatment post injury, for tight muscles, to reduce joint stiffness or where pain is present.

There are several different ways to achieve mobilisation to get the desired outcome, and this can vary depending on each individual client, their injury/affected area, and their needs. Some examples of these techniques are:

  • Rhythmic movements of a joint that is repeated
  • Holding sustained pressure in place to create a stretch
  • Applying a smooth and gliding force to a joint
  • Various stroke patterns directly against soft tissue structures
  • Frictions to increase blood flow directly to the area

Mobilisations can help a variety of musculoskeletal issues and areas including but not limited to:

  • Shoulder
  • Knee
  • Hip
  • Back
  • Neck
  • Ankle

Mobilisations are just some of many techniques used within our soft tissue therapy appointments here at tfd therapy. The best results often come from the combined therapy approach, which is why we will also involve other soft tissue therapy techniques, sports massage, and rehabilitation exercises with mobilisations to get to the desired outcome.
