Sports massage is a form of massage that concentrates on specific areas of tension or restriction in the body. Your therapist will have a good understanding of anatomy and will use a variety of techniques to help relieve the muscles in this area. A common misconception is that you must participate in sports or the gym to be able to have a sports massage and this is incorrect – we welcome anyone for a sports massage ao if you are suffering with an area of tension then we can help!
Sports massage works to release what we call ‘myofascial trigger points’ that have built up in the muscles – essentially where the fibres of the muscle have become a bit stuck. These trigger points can occur from your muscles not recovering properly after lots of repetitive use, or from lack of movement, injury, trauma, stress, or dehydration.
Massage releases feel-good endorphins into the body which causes the brain to release oxytocin. Oxytocin is a natural chemical that reduces pain so your pain levels will be reduced. It will help your muscles to recover effectively by increasing circulation and blood flow, meaning oxygenated blood can get into your muscles along with the nutrients they need, resulting in you being less likely to get injured.
You will find you have more flexibility in your muscles and an improved range of movement – this means you can perform better, whether that is at day-to-day tasks, in the gym or at your specific sport. Your sleep will improve along with your mental well-being due to lowered stress levels.
Sports massage can be beneficial when you have a specific restriction or tightness, as well as being a brilliant form of maintenance treatment. It is so important to look after our body as it is the only one that we get! Take some time out and start looking after yourself.
